Learners moved from completing compliance training to actively applying safety judgment.
Client:
A mid-size transportation organization operating in a regulated, safety-critical environment.
Audience:
Operational employees responsible for handling, identifying, or reporting dangerous goods.
The Problem
The organization needed to deliver mandatory dangerous goods training to meet regulatory requirements. Existing training approaches presented several challenges:
-
Highly text-heavy compliance modules led to low engagement
-
Learners focused on completing the course rather than understanding real risks
-
Regulations were difficult to translate into day-to-day operational decisions
-
Limited learner confidence when identifying and responding to dangerous goods situations
This created a risk where employees technically “completed” training but lacked confidence and accuracy in real operational contexts.
The Solution
I designed a gamified, scenario-based e-learning experience that transformed regulatory content into an active learning journey.
Using Articulate Storyline 360 enhanced with JavaScript, I created an experience where learners:
-
Made decisions in realistic operational scenarios
-
Earned feedback and progress based on performance
-
Experienced consequences of incorrect choices in a safe environment
Custom visuals designed in Adobe Illustrator supported clarity, realism, and engagement, helping learners quickly recognize hazards and focus on decision-making rather than reading dense text.
