Learners progressed from formula memorization to confident decision-making under changing conditions.
Client:
A mid-size transportation organization operating in a regulated, safety-critical environment.
Audience:
Operational staff responsible for aircraft weight and balance calculations and related decision-making.
The Problem
Weight and balance calculations are critical to safe operations, yet traditional training methods often fail to prepare learners for real-world variability.
Key challenges included:
-
Learners memorized formulas without fully understanding underlying principles
-
Static examples did not reflect changing operational conditions
-
Limited practice in handling increasing complexity and risk
-
Errors occurred when conditions deviated from “ideal” scenarios
The organization needed training that allowed learners to build accuracy, confidence, and judgment under varying conditions.
The Solution
I designed a gamified, scenario-based e-learning experience that progressively increased difficulty through changing weather conditions, mirroring real operational challenges.
Using Articulate Storyline 360 enhanced with JavaScript, learners progressed through three levels, each represented by a weather scenario:
-
Level 1 – Sunny: Ideal conditions with basic calculations
-
Level 2 – Rainy: Added variables requiring increased attention and accuracy
-
Level 3 – Stormy: High-risk conditions demanding precision, judgment, and error management
Weather acted as both a visual cue and a difficulty modifier, reinforcing the relationship between operational conditions and decision-making risk.
