Hazard Recognition and PPE Training for Construction Workers

Hazard Recognition & PPE Training for Construction Workers

Learners progressed from passively recognizing PPE to actively identifying hazards and selecting the right protection for the task.

Client:

A mid-sized construction company focused on improving on-site safety and reducing workplace injuries through effective training.

Audience:

Construction workers and site personnel working in active job-site environments.

Details:

  • New hires entering construction roles

  • Experienced workers requiring safety refreshers

  • Workers exposed to multiple on-site hazards (dust, machinery, tools, working at height)

Problem

The Problem

Construction workers are exposed to multiple hazards on dynamic job sites, yet training often focuses on listing PPE requirements rather than helping workers recognize hazards and apply protection in context.

Key challenges included:

  • Workers wore PPE without understanding why it was needed

  • Limited ability to identify hazards before starting work

  • Training focused on compliance, not decision-making

  • Learners struggled to match PPE to specific job-site conditions

  • Passive content reduced engagement and retention

The organization needed a solution that helped workers analyze real work environments and make safer decisions.

Solution

The Solution

I designed a scenario-informed microlearning module that shifts the focus from memorizing PPE to recognizing hazards and selecting appropriate protection.

Built in Rise 360 and enhanced with AI-generated visuals and B-roll, the module follows a clear learning flow:

  • Hazard-first approach: Learners begin by identifying hazards in a realistic construction scene

  • Interactive exploration: A “Spot the Hazards” activity encourages visual analysis of the work environment

  • Targeted learning: PPE is introduced as a response to specific hazards (hazard → protection)

  • Reinforcement: Flash cards connect each type of PPE to real job situations

  • Application: Knowledge checks validate understanding of hazards and PPE selection

The design emphasizes real-world relevance, visual learning, and decision-making.
