Importance of Well-Formulated Assessment Questions

🚨If learners need to read an assessment question three times… the problem isn’t the learner. It’s the question.
In training assessments, I often see questions written by SMEs that are designed—intentionally or not—to trap the learner instead of assessing their knowledge.
Examples I see all the time:
 • Vague questions
 • Complicated sentence structures
 • Answer choices that are a paragraph long
 • “Trick” wording that confuses more than it measures

An assessment shouldn’t test how well someone can decode a question.
It should test whether they understood the training.
