Training program managers often face a crucial decision: Should we follow the structured ADDIE model or embrace the flexible SAM approach? The answer isn't always clear-cut, but the VUCA framework can help guide the choice.

VUCA ADDIE SAM Instructional Design

VUCA — which stands for Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity — is a framework designed to help leaders and teams navigate challenging environments. By applying VUCA thinking to instructional design, we can align our methods with the nature of the project.

There's a common misconception that SAM is always the better choice because it's agile. While SAM offers flexibility, ADDIE remains highly effective in structured environments where clear requirements and evaluation checkpoints are critical. The best choice depends on the project's unique characteristics.

When to Choose ADDIE:

✅ Volatile Environment: When requirements are stable but changes may occur in phases, ADDIE's structured approach ensures each stage is reviewed and validated before moving forward.

✅ Complex Projects: For content-heavy programs or those requiring detailed evaluation steps, ADDIE's methodical design reduces the risk of overlooking key elements.

When to Choose SAM:

✅ Uncertain Environment: In fast-changing situations where learning needs may shift quickly, SAM's iterative process allows for rapid adjustments.

✅ Ambiguous Needs: When project goals are unclear or evolving, SAM's collaborative and flexible nature helps refine the design throughout development.

Example in Practice:

Imagine designing a training program for aviation mechanics:

  • If the training requires precise technical content with strict compliance standards, ADDIE may be the better fit.

  • If the project involves frequent feedback cycles and content that evolves with new technology, SAM might provide better agility.

By evaluating your project's environment through the VUCA lens, you can make an informed decision that ensures your design approach aligns with the project's unique challenges.
