Training Program Managers: Knowing When to coach and When to manage
As training program managers, we often juggle multiple roles—strategist, mentor, problem-solver, and leader. But one of the most critical skills we need is knowing when to coach and when to manage our teams.
🔹 Managing is about structure, direction, and accountability. It’s ensuring deadlines are met, projects stay on track, and teams have the resources they need.
🔹 Coaching is about empowerment. It’s guiding, asking the right questions, and helping our teams develop their problem-solving skills rather than simply giving them answers.

So how do we strike the right balance?
✔ When to Manage:
A new project needs clear direction.
A team member is struggling with performance.
Deadlines and efficiency are the priority.
✔ When to Coach:
A team member is looking for growth and development.
The goal is to build long-term problem-solving skills.
Encouraging innovation and independent thinking.
Great training leaders understand that the best results come from knowing when to lead from the front and when to step back and support growth.
